Join us this Thursday (August 6) as we celebrate National Farmers Market Week! While farmers markets have been in existence for hundreds of years, they have definitely seen a surge in popularity over the last several. According to the USDA, there are more than 4,600 farmers markets across the country. Aren't you lucky to have one so conveniently located for you to enjoy farm fresh produce, meats, baked goods, dairy products and loads of vendor-produced goodies. In addition, enjoy free weekly entertainment options. We are glad to put the fun back in your fresh food shopping!
What to expect this week: tomatoes, corn, beans, brussel sprout, onions, zucchini, potatoes, broccoli, radishes, peppers, beets, carrots, cabbage, lettuce/greens, blueberries, raspberries, variety of herbs and so much more!! How about a crusty loaf of bread to highlight some tomatoes, onion and basil, all drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette? It's going to be hot this weekend, so turn to your grill versus turning on the oven. There are too many meat options to name every cut, but from pork to elk to beef to emu to chicken. Whether you want to go casual with brats or burgers or high fallutin' with some lovely steaks! Before you grill, try Joel's Jamaican jerk marinade that has just the right amount of kick to enhance the flavor of your bbq'd meal. M&B's BBQ sauce comes in three varieties for any palate. Both Joel's and M&B offer samples, so come try before you buy. One taste and you'll be sold!
In the doldrums about what to cook? Me too! Come by the Market Info Booth to pick up your free recipes! This week Becky has planned an entire meal for you highlighting some of the items you'll find at the farmers market including a shopping list! Don't say "ewwwww", but come by on August 13th for a brussel sprout recipe. Yes, we used to hide them in our napkins or feed them to the dog when mom and dad weren't looking, but give them a try again. Our palates do change as we get older--let's see what we've been missing!
This week's activities are great for kids, gardeners, and those who enjoy good music and a summer picnic (and I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy those!)
4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Princess Anna is here to entertain the kids starting with a magical 4:30 p.m. storytime followed by face painting and balloon animals. Don't miss out on this special visit!
3 to 7 p.m.: Master Gardeners are at the Market today and just waiting to help you keep your flowers blooming, grass green, and trees and shrubs healthy.
6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Picnic / 7:00 p.m. Big Band Concert
