Legacy Tree
The City of Maple Grove’s Legacy Tree Program provides the opportunity to nominate the largest native trees within the City limits. Only trees native to Minnesota can be nominated. There are 52 native species of coniferous and deciduous trees. Native trees are ones that grew naturally or spontaneously in the undisturbed forest before the arrival of the Europeans.
The tree nominated for the Tree Registry is judged on three measurements: the circumference in inches of its trunk 4-1/2 feet above the ground, its height in feet, and one-quarter of its crown spread in feet. The total of these three measurements will be the points awarded to that particular tree. A “Champion” is one in each species that has the moist points. If two trees have exactly the same score, the tree with the largest trunk circumference becomes the “Champion”. This scoring system is similar to the one used by the State of Minnesota for their “Native Big Tree Registry”. Nominations for the Maple Grove tree registry will be accepted year round.
Trees in public places can be nominated as well as on private property. This program is strictly voluntary. If a tree on private property is nominated, the property owner will have the final decision as to whether a tree will be on the list of award winners.
