Barking Dogs:
The community service division of the police department receives several barking dog complaints each year. City Code Chapter 6 Sec. 6-11 “Disturbing Noises” states that an owner or a keeper of an animal shall not allow the animal to make noise as to cause unreasonable annoyance or disturbance. If you would like to report a barking dog complaint, contact the Hennepin County Dispatch Center.
Dogs and Cats at Large:
Maple Grove City Code Chapter 6 Sec. 6-5 “Dogs and Cats At Large” requires that all dogs and cats within the city limits be kept under restraint. Dogs and cats must be kept on their own property, in a vehicle or on a leash not to exceed six feet. To report a dog or cat at large, contact the Hennepin County Dispatch Center.
Dog and Cat Licensing: Pet License Application Form (print, complete and return to police department)
Maple Grove City Code Chapter 6 Sec. 6-41 and 6-42 requires that all dogs and cats over the age of six months have a current rabies vaccination and a current City License. Licenses are currently $2 per calendar year, renewed annually. Licenses can be purchased at the Police Department during regular business hours.
Strays and Impounded Domestic Animals:
All stray dogs and cats are impounded at the P.U.P.S. Animal Containment Facility. If you have found an animal, contact our Hennepin County Dispatch Center and a Community Service Officer will respond. If you have lost an animal, you may also contact the Hennepin County Dispatch Center or the PUPS Animal Containment Facility. The reclaim an animal from the PUPS Facility, you must provide current proof of a rabies vaccination, pay the Impound and Board fees and purchase a City License before the animal can be released. All fees are paid at the Maple Grove Police Department.
Animal Bites:
Every year, the Maple Grove Police Department receives several calls of animals biting human beings. Those most frequently bitten are young children. The most common areas bitten are the hands and face. All children should be taught how to behave around any animal that they are unfamiliar with. If you are approached by a dog you should do the following:

Remain calm

Do not scream
-
Do not run
-
Avoid eye contact with the dog

Stand very still until the dog moves away, then back up slowly until the animal has retreated

If the dog does attack, “feed” it a jacket or anything else that can be placed between you and the dog

If the dog knocks you down, curl up and cover your ears with your fists

If you, or someone you know have been bitten, call 911 immediately

Seek medical attention
Domestic Animal Limits:
Maple Grove residents are allowed to own two adult dogs (over the age of six months) and two adult cats (over the age of six months). If you desire to have three dogs or three cats, you must apply for a Private Kennel License. The Private Kennel License Application can be obtained from the Maple Grove Police Department. Current cost for a Private Kennel License is $75/calendar year. The maximum amount of dogs or cats with a Private Kennel License is three. All dogs and cats must also be individually licensed with an affixed city license as well.
City Code Sec. 6-17 describes the numbers and types of animals that can be owned within the Maple Grove city limits.
Sanitary Conditions:
The Sanitary Conditions Code, Sec. 6-18(f) requires anyone that owns, keeps, harbors, or has control of a dog to remove any fecal matter that the animal deposits on public property or private property. If someone is walking a dog, they must also have in their possession a means to collect and dispose of all the dog’s fecal matter. The premises on which the animal is kept shall have the fecal matter removed frequently as to not cause an odor problem or attract rodents, flies or insects.
