The department is responsible for the planning, design and supervision of construction of all city streets, sewers, and water lines.  Other infrastructure issues like street lighting and local transportation issues are also the department's responsibility. 

Review of proposed plats for proper drainage and extension of utilities, recording of final plats, and determining development assessments and sureties are also work tasks of the Engineering staff.

Some recycling and yard waste programs are managed by department staff.
